Why do women get smaller raises than men?

A professor says she thinks that the gender wage gap can partially be due to assumptions managers may have about what kinds of rewards male and female employees may value.

Women still lag behind men when it comes to earnings and promotions. Some attribute this to factors like poorer negotiating skills. But this new study offers something else: Ammunition, for women who want to break that cycle. Professor Maura Belliveau of Long Island University in New York set out to learn why men land more significant raises and promotions than men.

Belliveau's study found that two-thirds of available money for raises went to men. She posits that this gap occurs because managers believe that women are more willing to accept "symbollic rewards," such as more respect over pay. The attitude, she says, is more "I get to do something nice for her."

"When they're looking at men and deliberating about a pay raise for men, it's not that they think that men don't value status or respectful treatment," she said in an interview. "But they in no sense think of that as substitutable for a better outcome."

But several surveys show that women value higher pay just as much as men. Take a listen to the interivew above to learn more about Belliveau's findings and how she thinks managers can hedge against potential unconscious biases they may have.

Stories like this really help to point out the problems women have regarding equal pay and why they sue to make sure they get what is right and fair for their jobs. Pay discrimination is still a really big issue and the only way companies will respond to the pressure is for stories like this to inform the public about the pay disparity.

I'm a female that has worked the last 26 years in a male dominated industry. When I was a single mother and the sole support of my family, I got lower raises because the boss knew I had a family to support and wouldn't just up and quit. All of the other people had a working mate and could afford to do that. After my children grew up, I went back to school and spent 4 years working full time and going to school half time. My boss (a different one) tried to use my professional registration for the benefit of the company without giving me a raise. He seemed to think giving me a title change would make me happy. I told him no pay, no play and I would remove my registration from company records. After years of having men with lesser qualifications being promoted ahead of me, no more! I've worked harder than most of the men I've worked with and it's time to be paid what I'm worth to the company.

What bunch of nonesense. Men and women are different, I know that must be a news flash. Hey men pay more for car insurance, woemn pay nore for health insurace. It's just the way it is and for good reason. Women have to work in the workplace with men that have had nothing to do but be good at what their job is, women often have other obligations that detract from their work.

What a bunch of BS. this is exactly what we women are doing everyday dealing with guys that never had to do anything else but work and make money. forget about raising kids, balancing home, work, kids, food and everytihng else not to mention papmering the guys to make them feed more powerful and wanted. this is exactly why we never get wht we deserve 9forget about getting ahead) at work. i see it everyday that guys work less, brag more and get twice as much money than their female co workers for less work!!! we need had male support and undestanding from guys that actually can understand the other side. there are some fthem out there, but not too many!!

I wonder if smaller raises has anything to do with working moms feeling like we're not doing enough, not good enough -- my house is never clean enough, my kids are enriched enough, I feel like I can't give my "all" to my job -- therefore I don't feel like I really deserve a big raise and can more easily accept the implicit, "I'm not really worth as big a raise" as my male colleagues who don't appear to be struggling to fulfill PTA/school responsibilities, make sure the laundry is done, and get all my paperwork/work responsibilities done as well as have some time for myself and great sex with my spouse!!

Because women, left on their own with no male "help," will quickly bankrupt any business!!! The man at the job tends to actually do the job while the woman likes to "talk" about it!!!

No, it is not. I've seen a lot of women at many different jobs in my lifetime that can behave in ways that would get a man fired or reprimanded!!! I have never seen a team of women, without the help or labor of men, accomplish anything substantial.
