Robert Reich Series
Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich has a lot to say about work, life, and technology in his "Get a Life!" series on Marketplace. Though many of us are "better off" than ever before, we find ourselves working harder. We work longer hours, work more jobs over the course of a lifetime, and face greater job insecurity.

In his new book, "The Future of Success," Reich examines the balance between paid work and the rest of life. In his Marketplace series, he'll explore many of the themes from the book, including employee/employer loyalty, the end of the 40-hour workweek, and the effects of technology and innovation on the workplace. We'll get in on the action as Reich talks with workers of all kinds from all over the country, from the oldest living wage earner in the nation to the attention giver, whose job is to provide concierge services to working parents.

Here are audio files of pieces from this series, broadcast on the Marketplace Morning Report and the Marketplace evening edition. The series was produced by Deborah Clark, with assistant producer Kelly Whalen. The production engineer was Peter Stenshoel, with technical assistance from Phil Richards. If you'd like to get a tape or transcript of this, or anything else you hear on Marketplace, go to http://www.marketplace.org/about/cassettes.html.

Hand -to-Mouth
RealAudio
Today we wrap up our series we've been calling 'Get a Life'. Over the past couple of months with the help of political economist Robert Reich, we've been hearing from people all over the country about the choices they're making in their lives and work. We conclude with a couple of actors, trying to make a living here in Los Angeles. Kim Fitzgerald and husband David Starzick don't make enough as actors to pay the bills, so they piece together part-time work; working in restaurants, taking care of a disabled man twice a month, walking dogs for their friends and neighbors. They talked with Robert Reich in their living room in Hollywood.
