Kim Jong-Il: technologist
Yeah, that’s sort of like John Moe: NBA center. But he had a lot more leverage to make his bonkers self-deception happen. During 2007 summit talks, he said, “”I’m an Internet expert too. It’s all right to wire the industrial zone only, but there are many problems if other regions of the North are wired.” Those “problems” must be why North Koreans escaping to other countries often had never heard of the internet.
Gizmodo offers up a few other ways that Dear Leader missed the technology clue train, including faulty missiles, empty boasts about nuclear power, really really awful laptops, and lousy arcade games.
Then of course there’s the straight outta 1996 government website.
But at least we can always enjoy the wonderful Kim Jong-Il Looking At Things Tumblr blog.
My favorite is when he looks at sausages:
Marketplace is on a mission.
We believe Main Street matters as much as Wall Street, economic news is made relevant and real through human stories, and a touch of humor helps enliven topics you might typically find…well, dull.
Through the signature style that only Marketplace can deliver, we’re on a mission to raise the economic intelligence of the country—but we don’t do it alone. We count on listeners and readers like you to keep this public service free and accessible to all. Will you become a partner in our mission today?
