Remember PCs? Ah, those were the days.

Research firm Gartner predicts global PC sales will only rise 3.8 percent this year. The economy plays a big part, especially in the U.S., where over half of all PC sales are rung up. Also, the next version of Windows won't be out until late next year, so even if you or your business has the capacity to buy a computer, chances are you can wait for the upgrades to start shipping. In fact the first looks people have been getting about Windows 8 all point to a touch screen device.

Might this also be the death of PCs as people's primary computing platform? Mine is basically an overdone Network Attached Storage device at this point, my laptops and other portable devices do almost everything I need, except large-scale storage.

Hardly the death of PCs. I'm a graphic design/digital artist, and I rely heavily on my desktop computer for my work. While there are laptops that would suite my needs, they are astronomically more expensive than a PC of equal power that I assembled myself.

As for tablets, right now they just don't...have the capacity to do anything that would see them replacing a desktop or laptop in terms of design/art creation.
