Kenneth Cole has a Twitter fail

A final note, from the Marketplace "Oh no they didn't!" file. I really can't say it any better than this tweet I spotted this afternoon: "Bet it sucks to be Kenneth Cole's PR team right now."

Seems earlier today, the fashion folks at Kenneth Cole launched their own public relations crisis with this tweet -- and I quote: "Millions are in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online... -KC."

Ever since, the outraged Twitter-verse has been responding with suggestions for new ad tweets, such as: "People from New Orleans are flooding into Kenneth Cole stores." The company has since issued a tweet saying it wasn't intending to make light of a serious situation.

I thought it was funny.

The comparison of Egypt's current situation to that of those trapped by Hurricane Katrina is illogical. The hurricane was a natural disaster in which those who suffered had no physical part in bringing about. Egypt's uprising, regardless of whether the "revolution" is a just one or not, is very much led BY people who certainly must take responsibility for the violence and disruption that their own actions have caused--even if it is in the name of freedom and democracy.

You are an absolute idiot! Please tell me that you are not an actual teacher!!! If so, I might as well home school my children! Clearly you do not understand the value of FREEDOM if for a minute you are suggesting that the Egyptian people are 'getting what they deserve'. Go live under a Dictator for a while and then talk about 'taking responsibility...you fool!!!

I really do teach English, and I love what I do. Perhaps you should go back and read what I wrote. I never wrote, nor even suggested, that the Egyptian people are "getting what they deserved." I DID say that they must take responsibility for the disruption/violence (on their part, not the military's) that has been brought about BY THEIR ACTIONS. That is, even in a revolution, they are responsible for their actions. What I wrote had nothing to say about living under an iron rule. If the Egyptian people want freedom, and I can certainly understand why they would want that, I support their right to peacefully demonstrate for it. However, that right does not release them from responsibility for WHAT HAPPENS during those protests.

So, on second thought, you probably shouldn't homeschool your children. If you did, they might never learn how to read for critical analysis. :)
