Rap Mogul Jay-Z releases one million copies of his new album “Magna Carta Holy Grail” today to one million Samsung Galaxy S4 owners. The rapper promoted the straight-to-phone release with a video from the recording studio — it played on TV during the NBA finals and was posted on YouTube.

Musical artists in 2013 are almost required to use the digital world. But Jay-Z’s deal with Samsung breaks new ground. And it’s not just Jay-Z. Lady Gaga’s next album Artpop will be an interactive app.

Jim Donio, president of the National Association of Recording Merchandisers, joins Marketplace Tech host Ben Johnson to discuss the new industry trend.
