Savings bonds are safe

Chris Farrell Jul 28, 2011

Question: Should I cash in my EE and I bonds? Are they safe? Are they going to continue to be safe? I’m a retired teacher, already lost big on my retirement house value, can’t afford to lose the little bits in these bonds. My Mom bought the double E bonds for me in 1992. Thank you so much. Cheryl, Tucson, AZ

Answer: Your EE and I-bonds are safe. It’s a disgrace that Washington is causing people to doubt the safety behind the full faith and credit of the federal government. Despite the insanity of the debt-limit drama, the bottom line for you is that the U.S. government will make good on its savings bonds. I would hang tight.
