Nintendo takes claim over slang

Bob Moon Nov 12, 2010

A final note. “It’s on like Donkey Kong.” Next time you find yourself tempted to use that pop-culture reference, you just might need to get permission from Nintendo.

According to the online Urban Dictionary, “It’s on like Donkey Kong” means “to compete at a high level.” Doesn’t everybody know that? No matter that, the phrase has been heard in music and movies for years. Nintendo is just now claiming ownership. CNN reports the company that owns the popular Donkey Kong franchise has filed its request with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office.
