ICE raids on Cyber Monday

John Moe Nov 29, 2011

If it’s a holiday, even one as abstracted as Cyber Monday, it must be time for a raid by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE. In collaboration with the Justice Department, ICE seized the domains of 150 websites accused of selling counterfeit NFL jerseys, fake Oakley sunglasses, and more. Politico says that as part of the ongoing Operation In Our Sites (get it? Sights/Sites?), agents purchased products from the sites and then checked it with the rights holders to make sure it was counterfeit. Last year the operation took down 82 sites. Operators of the sites have 60 days to appeal but in the mean time visitors will be greeted with a message that authorities have shut the domain down. Critics of ICE say the operation lacks due process.
