Military family advocates hope to make it easier for active duty military to get some food aid

Nearly a quarter of children in schools on military bases are eligible for free meals, according to 2015 data from the Department of Defense, the latest available. That’s just one indication that many active duty members of the U.S. military don’t have enough food to feed their families. That is in part because of the government’s own rules: many active duty military can’t get Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, what used to be called food stamps, because the government counts a soldier’s housing allowance as income, pushing them above the eligibility line. Now a coalition of anti-hunger groups and military families are hoping to change that in the 2018 Farm Bill.
