It’s been called the “Wikipedia of rap”, and it just landed $15 million in venture capital funding. RapGenius.com allows people to post annotations and commentary on the meanings behind rap lyrics.

“I think people are coming for the voice and the community and it’s rap academia — and we don’t even charge tuition — and it’s a place full of love,” says Mahbod Moghadam, one of the founders of the site.

Asked about whether the site has staying power, Moghadam says, “Lyrics have been around forever and no one is going to stop writing rap songs or country songs or analyzing the Bible.”

Listen to the audio interview above to hear Moghadam’s explanation behind an exeprt of the first verse of Kanye West’s No Church in the Wild.

I’m out here balling, I know y’all hear my sneaks

Marketplace is on a mission.

We believe Main Street matters as much as Wall Street, economic news is made relevant and real through human stories, and a touch of humor helps enliven topics you might typically find…well, dull.

Through the signature style that only Marketplace can deliver, we’re on a mission to raise the economic intelligence of the country—but we don’t do it alone. We count on listeners and readers like you to keep this public service free and accessible to all. Will you become a partner in our mission today?
