Government initiatives to help save homes OR minimize tax/credit consequences for homeowners who must sell or who lose homes to foreclosure are just months old. According to Treasury, as of mid-July, 354,000 trial loan modifications have been offered, 180,000+ are underway. Help doesn't stop at refinancing or loan modification. Short Sales (lender accepts sale proceeds for payoff of the loan, even though the amount is “short†of the debt owed) or deed-in-lieu of foreclosure are offered. Tax forgiveness, homeowner incentives, and relocation allowances are available. www.MakingHomeAffordable.com Servicer training is gearing up. Problem--many homeowners with “distressed loans†are ignoring calls and letters from servicers offering foreclosure options and are not contacting free Homeowners Hope Hotline or HUD counselors. Perhaps homeowner fear, denial, and misinformation are getting in the way. Knocking on the doors of distressed property owners is now being tried. Help is available. A media information blitz would help.
