SCOTT JAGOW: The Academy Awards are Sunday. And here in Tinseltown, they’re making the usual preparations. But this year there’s something new: a fleet of electric cars and hybrids. From the Marketplace Sustainability Desk, Sam Eaton reports.


SAM EATON: When it comes to getting the message out about global warming, Matt Petersen with the environmental group Global Green says Hollywood is the perfect match.

The group is lending Oscar stars a fleet of fuel-efficient vehicles as part of its “red carpet, green cars” campaign.

Petersen says the goal is to reach a wider audience.

MATT PETERSEN: By working with celebrities, you can break through some of that media clutter and be able to communicate to the American public through how they increasingly get their news, through entertainment-oriented publications and news shows.

But if the sight of Leonardo DiCaprio arriving in an all-electric Tesla Roadster doesn’t convince you to shell out $92,000 for one of your own, don’t worry. Petersen says there are cheaper ways to be green.

Things like keeping the tires on that old beater properly inflated. Just don’t expect to make it into the pages of the Hollywood gossip mags.
