Let's see what Reed Hastings has to say about this

Back in April, Dish Network won an auction to buy Blockbuster for a sweet $320 million. And, as if Netflix didn't have any other fires to put out, on Friday Dish will debut its streaming movie service.

Some things to look for:

  • Will it be named after Blockbuster? Because...really? A brand that is now synonymous with vacant storefronts?

  • Blockbuster already has a DVD by mail and streaming service so this could be a dramatic upgrading of that. Otherwise it's kind of weird to launch something that already, you know, exists.

  • What will the selection be? People complain about Netflix's streaming selection all the time. Could this be better and really give Red Envelope a run for its money? And if so, why has Blockbuster never been able to do that before?

The Blockbuster Movie Pass selection is going to be great, including thousands of on demand, streaming choices, a 100,000 by-mail movies and 3,000 games. Not to mention you also get 20 premium movie channels included in the $10 a month. Definitely a great value in my opinion. I’m actually an employee and subscriber of DISH Network, so that’s where I get most of my entertainment, still though, I have to admit until recently I had Netflix too. I always thought it was a nice convenience and looked at it as kind of rounding out my choices. That’s all changing though, I cancelled them due to all their price changes and splitting the company up and figured I would just do without. Then I saw the press release about Blockbuster Movie Pass starting October 1st and got excited. It’s similar to Netflix but better because I can get dvd’s, blu-rays, and even games at the same rate + streaming + in-store exchanges! All for $10 a month, can’t beat that. Plus if you sign up for DISH now you can get 12 months of Blockbuster Movie Pass free. Check it out here if you’d like http://bit.ly/pzsPYW definitely worth a few moments of your time.
