Supplant your lawn

Though ornamental lawns can be lovely, they often require serious maintenance and require lakes of water to stay verdant. Redesigning your front yard to include drought-tolerant plants like succulents and even moss will not only keep water usage much lower and give your foliage a strong, sculptural quality that sets it apart from the neighbors. Let them worry about a yard that looks like a fairway at Augusta.

Or pull up the front lawn and put in a vegetable garden. I had green beans in the front yard all summer. Not only did I have fresh produce every day, but I met a lot of neighbors. The front yard garden is quite the conversation starter.
