How much of a difference does a face make? How about $16 million in six weeks? That’s how much Wikipedia was able to raise, and many say it’s thanks to founder Jimmy Wales’ photograph banner asking for money on the website. Facebook also got some money, in the form of a $450 million investment from Goldman Sachs today. Illinois is in serious debt, trying to overcome a $13 billion deficit. Congress will debate raising the U.S.’s debt limit, or how much the government is allowed to borrow. Commentator David Leonhardt proposed reining in health care costs to put more money in consumers’ pockets. Dollar General plans to expand on its discount success. And shipping is growing in the Great Lakes. Here are the songs we played:

  • The Good Old Days – The LodgerBuy
  • Live to Tell the Tale – Passion PitBuy
  • A Sunshine Fix – Olivia Tremor Control
  • Destruction of Man – D-TensionBuy
  • Walkin’ Smart – SpunkshineBuy

Marketplace is on a mission.

We believe Main Street matters as much as Wall Street, economic news is made relevant and real through human stories, and a touch of humor helps enliven topics you might typically find…well, dull.

Through the signature style that only Marketplace can deliver, we’re on a mission to raise the economic intelligence of the country—but we don’t do it alone. We count on listeners and readers like you to keep this public service free and accessible to all. Will you become a partner in our mission today?
