Amazon buys Woot

author198 Jul 1, 2010

Woot.com is this really strange and wonderful online retailer that is sort of the opposite of Amazon. Instead of billions of items, they sell precisely one a day, generally at a pretty big discount, and they have a fixed inventory of that item. So if it sells out by 9am, that’s it, no more business that day. It almost feels more like a game than a shopping experience. The item might be a computer, it might be a lamp, today it happens to be a Kindle. No coincidence there since Amazon bought Woot yesterday for $110 million in cash. Woot says it intends on running the business as usual now that they’ve been bought by their polar opposites. They announced it in the best “we’ve been bought” announcement EVAR. (via BoingBoing)
