Jay Gellert bio

A Brooklynite by birth, Jay M. Gellert would shape much of his career on the West Coast.

Gellert attended Stanford University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1977. After graduation, he entered the health insurance business, with executive positions at California Healthcare System, Bay Pacific Health Corporation, and Health Systems International.

In 1991, Gellert took a career detour and joined the investment firm of Shattuck Hammond Partners in New York. He then joined Health Net in 1996 as president and chief operating officer. In 2008, he became CEO of the company.

Efficiency has been the major focus during Gellert’s tenure at Health Net. After becoming CEO of the company, Gillert shut down divisions of the company that were unproductive, and he started a new technology division that aimed to help doctors and patients by developing online services to prescribe medications and keep records. In 2001, Gellert and his team started a Web-based system to streamline the process for doctors and patients to file claims.

Gellert serves on several boards, including America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) and Ventas, Inc. In addition, he is a member of the board of directors of the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH), serves on the CAQH executive committee and is chairman of its administrative simplification committee.
