The software giant and patent lawsuit fan will introduce an ultra cheap PC as part of the FCC’s program. It’s rolling out a $250 PC next year for families who meet the requirement of having at least one child enrolled in a free school lunch program. The program was announced in theory a while ago but now we know it’s coming next year and that the PCs will come pre-loaded with Microsoft Office and educational software. It’s unclear which hardware partners are teaming up with Microsoft on this one. It would seem that those would be the companies who really have something at stake here since they’re building actual objects as opposed to distributing software licenses but it could be that Microsoft is subsidizing the production.
