TEXT OF STORY

MARK AUSTIN THOMAS: Time Inc is shrinking. It’s selling off some of the smaller but still profitable magazines it owns. Rachel Dornhelm explains why.

RACHEL DORNHELM: The magazines up for sale include Parenting, Popular Science and Field & Stream.

However Time Inc. says they’ll hold onto Golf and This Old House.

Mediaweek’s news editor Lisa Granatstein says this doesn’t reflect on how those particular magazines are doing. It’s a business move.

LISA GRANATSTEIN: By unloading the smaller niche titles, they will be able to invest more in the bigger titles, that have more readers, more eyeballs.

Granatstein says Time Inc. wants to concentrate its resources on major brands like Time, People and Sports Illustrated as they navigate new media trends.

She adds some of the magazines on the block will likely be bought by their current competitors.

I’m Rachel Dornhelm for Marketplace.
