PODCAST: Egypt markets spike, BART strike divide

Markets spike on Egypt's sharp turn. BART strike reveals the divide between tech and transit workers. And what business lessons can be learned from the Battle of Gettysburg?

This year is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Aside from its historical importance, turns out there are enduring leadership lessons to be learned as well. Business schools have a tool to look at leadership. It’s called a DISC analysis, which stands for Domincance, Influence, Steadiness, and Confidence. So what happens when DISC is applied to Gettysburg?

Egypt’s military chief announced Wednesday that President Mohammed Morsi had been deposed, after days of mass demonstrations against him. On Thursday, Supreme Constitutional Court Chief Justice Mansour Adly was sworn in as Egypt’s interim president. Markets in Egypt rose so quickly this morning officials had to temporarily suspend trading.

When thousands of BART workers went on strike this week over salaries, benefits, and safety concerns and shut down the San Francisco Bay Area’s main public transit system, the news made national headlines. The strike also laid bare a tricky cultural divide in the Bay Area, between traffic-weary tech workers who drive the local economy, and blue collar transit workers who feel left behind.
