Small talk: Guinness, Netflix, costumes
Marketplace's Brendan Newnam and Rico Gagliano talk with fellow staffers Ethan Lindsey, Dalasie Michaelis and Stacey Vanek-Smith about under-the-radar business stories. This week: Guinness beer, Netflix, and popular costumes for Halloween
TEXT OF INTERVIEW
Kai Ryssdal: A final note to wrap things up this week. A detour from the headlines to talk about the tidbits that didn’t get a lot of attention. It’s courtesy of Brendan Newnam, Rico Gagliano and the rest of the Marketplace staff.
Brendan Newnam: Ethan Lindsey, producer of the Marketplace Morning Report, what story are you going to be talking about this weekend?
Ethan Lindsey: Guinness beer.
Newnam: A perfect story for the weekend.
Lindsey: As always, although this time I’ll be talking about Daphne Guinness. She’s the heiress to the Guinness beer fortune. She’s one of these starlets, like a Paris Hilton.
Newnam: I’m sure she’s a celebrity in pubs all over.
Lindsey: All over. She’s being sued by her neighbors; they want her to stop taking baths.
Newnam: Does she live in a commune?
Lindsey: She’s reportedly overflowed her bathtub one too many times.
Newnam: You realize if the judge rules in the neighbors’ favor, there’s going to be 10-year-olds all over Manhattan filing for injunctions.
Rico Gagliano: Dalasie Michaelis, web developer, what story are you going to be talking about this weekend?
Dalaise Michaelis: Well a company called Sandvine just released a report that says 20 percent of all Internet traffic in the evenings is due to Netflix streaming videos over the Internet.
Gagliano: People watching movies on Netflix are 20 percent of Internet bandwidth?
Michaelis: Yeah the company still ships DVDs by mail, but they’re really going after the online business.
Gagliano: Wow. So this means only 80 percent of the Internet is now pornography?
Michaelis: Pretty much.
Newnam: That is, that’s startling.
Newnam: Stacy Vanek-Smith, senior reporter for Marketplace, what story are you going to be talking about this weekend?
Stacey Vanek-Smith: All right. Jersey Shore, Lady Gaga’s meat dress, the Mad Hatter, Playboy Bunnies.
Newnam: The decline of Western civilization?
Vanek-Smith: That is an excellent guess. But it’s actually a list of Yahoo’s most popular costume searches this Halloween.
Newnam: Really?
Vanek-Smith: Yeah, and there’s one also included: Chilean miners.
Newnam: Is it, they’re just going to put their kids in the basement for three months?
Vanek-Smith: Yeah, with nothing but candy.
Ryssdal: There’s oh so much more Rico and Brendan can do. It is called Dinner Party Download.
