The stakes as Obama hosts an Asian summit

The challenge for southern states is aligning political and economic goals.

President Barack Obama will host a two-day summit for the heads of state of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations beginning Monday, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and others. The meeting, held on an estate in Southern California, marks the first time the group has gathered for a standalone summit in the U.S. On the agenda are sessions dedicated to economic and security issues, plus an informal dinner.
