F is for flunk

Here are the numbers we're reading and watching for Thursday.

4 games

That’s how many games Tom Brady had been suspended for as a result of his alleged role in “deflategate,” the scandal in which the Patriots were accused of purposely deflating footballs for a competitive edge. But as Buzzfeed writes, that penalty was overturned by a judge on Thursday, with the judge stating that Brady was not made aware of the penalty should he be knowledgeable of the scheme.

43 percent

That’s the percentage of homes in the U.S. that are located in counties with a high, or very high, risk of a wildfire, hurricane or other natural disaster. And right up at the top (no surprise), is California.

511

That’s the mean math score from students who took this year’s SAT. The bad news: It’s the lowest number since 1999. And the reading score of 495 was the lowest its been since 1972. As Bloomberg writes, with increasingly more students taking the ACT than the SAT, these latest statistics are bad news for the College Board, which administers the SATs.

6 percent

That’s how much smaller the surface area of childrens’ brains were in families that made less than $25,000 than children of families who made $150,000 or more. The data comes from a study examining the known correlation between socioeconomic status and performance in school. While researchers say the information could be used to advocate for emphasis on afterschool programs and nutrition, they have yet to pinpoint where spending should be directed to affect this specific physiological development of the brain.
