Apple’s earnings call today – let’s run through the morning bits

We already know that the iPhone alone produces more revenue than all Microsoft products combined. That’s pretty garish for one product, especially one product from a company that some of us can remember being on life support not all that long ago. And it seems that it won’t be fading away any time soon. AT&T reported earnings yesterday and the iPhone accounted for 73% of all smartphone activations for the company.
Verizon revealed last week that it sold 2.7M iPhones during the second quarter, accounting for 45% of the company’s smartphone sales. This is down from 3.2M from the first quarter. The iPhone 4S might be ageing, but consumers are still buying it en mass.

Meanwhile it’s rumors-a-go-go in Apple land. A new taller iPod is supposedly on the way, set to match the alleged new taller iPhone.
And a new iPad Mini is said to be coming in September while the much-anticipated iPhone 5 (we call it El Cinco here at MTR) would show up the same month, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, cited in Mac Rumors.

And Reuters is among several reporting that the new iPhone and maybe the new iPod will have 19-pin connectors to replace the current 30-pin configuration. No biggie, right? Well, if you’ve ever bought a docking station or other accessory made for the 30-pin set up, yeah, it kind of is.
