Sony seeks to regain its cool

The company that once represented all things cool, i.e. the Walkman, is not so cool anymore. Today the New York Times mocked, “Unable to focus, it now makes a bloated and bewildering lineup of gadgets, from handycams to car stereos.”

But Sony isn’t going to loserville without a fight. The CEO announced today that it’ll lay off 10,000 people and focus on three areas: mobile devices, cameras and camcorders and games. And what whiz-bang idea do they have to take them back to the techy cool-kids-table? A fancy watch.

According to All Things D, Sony is investing in another Android watch. “When paired with an Android phone (from Sony or another maker), the phone lets users read their email and texts, check the weather, and decide whether to pick up the phone when they see who is calling.” Which means now I know the answer to the question: What is more annoying than having a dinner date answer their phone in the middle of a conversation? It’s having your date check their watch to decide whether or not to answer their phone in the middle of the conversation.
