We recently brought you a story about how some members of congress are calling for more protection against the practice of phone cramming. That’s when some third party company signs you up – either by tricking you into signing up or by just doing it to you without your knowledge –  for a service you don’t really want. Maybe a dollar or two on your bill and you don’t even notice it. Verizon and AT&T have both now banned the practice on land line calls in an attempt to head off legislation that would require them to do so.
Now Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is going after cell service as well, calling for a ban on cramming. When we spoke to Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) about cramming, she said 80% of the incidents are on land lines so that’s what she was targeting but certainly the world is heading toward cell phones and if you’re in congress, this is a simple political move. After all, you don’t tend to hear from the pro-cramming lobby all that much.
