Skeletal tracking! Learn that term! It’s part of your advanced and creepy future. Microsoft is coming out with an update of the Kinect motion sensing system for Windows in May and this version, 1.5. will have more tools for software developers.
Microsoft is also planning to support a new “seated” 10-joint skeletal tracking system, which lets developers track the head, neck, and arms of seated and standing users in default and near mode. Kinect for Windows 1.5 includes new support for French, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese speech recognition too.
Kinect has been available for a while and is really known more for being a gaming system peripheral. There have been plenty of wow-factor applications people have designed for it but it’s going to be intriguing what people do with the PC version, especially with the new update. Motion sensing systems, available on a widespread commercial system, will be significant in ways that we’re a long ways off from totally getting.
