I’m not sure how anyone in Congress has any time to do anything but try to figure out how to get a debt crisis deal done, but apparently, they do. Sens. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) introduced the Data Security Act, which would “require financial establishments, retailers and federal agencies to protect sensitive information and to notify consumers after a data breach.” (from The Hill). The bill looks a lot like the bill Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) introduced in the House but has yet to pass out of the full Energy and Commerce Committee. That bill was met with opposition from Democrats who said the language was too vague.
