KAI RYSSDAL: House Democrats had not an inch to spare today when they voted on that $124 billion Iraq funding bill. It passed by the bare majority of 218 to 212. Despite efforts to win votes by loading it up with $21 billion worth of extra goodies.
It also contained deadlines for troop pullouts. And the vote brought the expected response from President Bush a couple of hours later.
PRESIDENT BUSH: These Democrats believe that the longer they can delay funding for our troops, the more likely they are to force me to accept restrictions on our commanders, an artificial timetable for withdrawl and their pet spending projects. This is not gonna happen.
The Senate votes next week on its version of the funding request.
