Donald Trump has suggested using the One China policy — where the U.S. does not recognize Taiwan as an independent state — as leverage to “get a deal” on trade or other issues. China experts suggest this could backfire. The status of Taiwan is non-negotiable for China and using it as a bargaining chip could spark retaliation in other areas such as trade or the South China sea. Some China experts suggest pursuing this strategy increases the chance of military conflict.
