Schumer calls for investigation of apps

Yeah, okay, before we have a ticker tape parade for the app down Broadway, New York Senator Chuck Schumer is casting a leery eye on this whole app business. Specifically, he’s vexed about the recent outbreak of reports that apps have been pilfering address books from phones, swiping photos, and generally messing with things on the phone that you wouldn’t think they’d need to.

Mashable quotes him:

“It sends shivers up the spine to think that one’s personal photos, address book, and who-knows-what-else can be obtained and even posted online – without consent,” Schumer wrote. “If the technology exists to open the door to this kind of privacy invasion, then surely technology exists to close it, and that’s exactly what must happen.”

Apple and Google have both promised to provide more explicit guidance to users about what’s being used.
