Comcast adds Fandango to its lineup

Another big merger in the media business: Cable provider Comcast is buying popular movie ticket website Fandango in its quest to create a one-stop entertainment destination site coming this summer.

Fandango will be part of a new Comcast entertainment site, where consumers will be able to look for and watch online videos, buy movie tickets and someday, buy and record movies.

More and more online companies have been getting into the entertainment distribution business-and vice versa.

Cable and satellite companies have been worrying about competition from tech companies as people spend more time surfing and less time watching TV and movies. Atlantic Equities analyst Hamilton Faber says Comcast is trying to make sure it gets a piece of the action wherever it is.

HAMILTON FABER: Comcast is very aware that there’s always going to be demand on consumers’ attention for entertainment away from the core living room area. And I think Comcast wants to be able to play to that and take a part in that any which way it can.

The new site, fancast.com, launches this summer.
