850k Android devices activated each day

This is a Marketplace.org Reader

That’s according to Google. Granted, Google is a company with a heavy interest in characterizing Android as a popular platform but still: damn. That’s 310,250,000 Android activations per year (math!). That was the announcement of Google Android chief Andy Rubin (he is chief of the Android line, he is not, as far as we know, some sort of robot chieftain himself) who is in attendance at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona but who announced the stat on his Google+ page because that’s the way these people do things lately.

For some context, that number is up from 700,000 a day, which Rubin announced in December and THAT number was up from 550,000 a day in November.

Here’s what I don’t know: what is the relative growth of Android compared to the relative growth of smartphones in general? Higher? Lower? About the same?
