Bonds and trade are the story this week. Yields on 30-year Treasurys hit an almost 20-year high, while news broke that the government amassed more than $40 trillion in debt obligations — which the Treasury Department has tried to offset with bond buybacks and issuance of more short-term debt.
In other news, the trade deal deadline with Canada was extended into the weekend, leaving the possibility that some Canadian imports could get slapped with a 50% tariff after all.
“Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal discussed all this, plus more of the week’s economic headlines, with Ana Swanson at The New York Times and Sudeep Reddy at MS NOW.
