As freelance journalist Maggie Hennessy moved between apartments, and the fridges that came with them, she found herself unsatisfied with her cold storage space. She explored the world of fridges — and why consumers are often unhappy with them — for Taste, and she spoke with “Marketplace” host Kristin Schwab about her findings.

“We have more options for configurations, you know like drawer-in-drawer compartments and modular shelving and freezers with pullout drawers, and a lot of people said it wasn’t working for their lifestyles,” Hennessy said. “I started to realize there was a combination of things happening, one being people weren’t using the new configurations that manufacturers had put in based on a lot of focus groups and surveys.”

Another factor is that today, more people have big collections of refrigerated goods like sauces and drinks that require a lot of storage space.
