For Didier Vakombua, it took six years to get asylum. He was an eye surgeon in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was forced to flee in 2008 after showing the dead bodies of massacre victims to a human rights organization. Now, he lives in Los Angeles with his family and works two jobs — during the day at a health clinic for low-income patients, and at night as a security guard. We caught up with Vakombua between shifts to talk about his life and plans for the future.
