When the Justice Department announced that it was looking into a possible lawsuit against six publishing companies, including Apple, over price-fixing allegations, most of the companies are reportedly in  negotiations to settle out of court. Not Apple. Reuters is reporting that the DOJ may open a case against Cupertino’s shining star as soon as today.

The Justice Department is investigating whether deals Apple cut two years ago with the quintet of major publishers – when the consumer electronics maker launched its iPad tablet computer – were done with the intent of propping up prices for digital books, sources have said.

The crux of the argument is whether Apple was in cahoots with the other publishers, making it nearly impossible for the book-buying public to find an e-book for less than what they could find for in the iTunes store.
Between patent infringement suits all over the world, as both accuser and accused, and the big kerfuffle in Chinese courts over who owns the iPad name, Apple lawyers are getting a workout. Hope they keep a lot of track suits handy.
