Weekly Wrap: The markets and the debt talks

Reviewing the week's news on Wall Street. This week: the latest on the debt talks after President Obama's press conference on Friday.

Kai Ryssdal talks with Marketplace’s John Dimsdale and David Gura.

On President Obama’s press conference late Friday:

John Dimsdale: I think we kind of knew that this was going to have a dramatic conclusion: I mean, we’re up against a deadline, and this is something where everybody’s playing their cards. And President Obama is trying to look like the adult in the room.

On whether the markets will react:

David Gura: I think that’s just a huge question — what’s going to happen Monday? I couldn’t help watching President Obama just a few minutes ago feeling this sort of sense of deja vu, because a week ago, they had this series of meetings at the White House almost every day that week. On toward the end of that week, President Obama came out and said, look we’re not meeting today, I’ve told members of Congress I’ve been talking to that it’s do or die time, you need to come to me with a plan — what’s possible and what can we do? And here we are, a week later.
