On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld an Arizona law that lets local officials revoke business licenses of businesses that are found to have hired illegal workers. Under the law, employers must use the federal government’s E-Verify program to check an employee’s citizenship status. But the E-Verify’s accuracy rate is reportedly not so good, maybe around 1% error rate. So out of every 100 legal applicants, one would be rejected. An editorial in the LA Times says that among those rejected workers, many would have no recourse to dispute and overturn the erroneous result. The editorial also says that the error rate may be much higher than 1%.
