While Congress hems and haws about privacy legislation, California is moving forward on a bill that would be, if passed, the first Do Not Track bill in the country. The Senate bill passed that chamber’s Judiciary Committee late Tuesday and has a few more stops before getting to Governor Jerry Brown.

“Still, it’s the first time such a bill has made it out of committee, and that’s a big deal, according to John Simpson, director of Consumer Watchdog’s Privacy Project. “This is the first time that a ‘do not track’ bill has actually had a hearing and been debated and then voted forward in the legislative process,” he said.” It’s not clear what technology would be used to implement this – might work through a setting on your browser. Google, Facebook, Time Warner have sent letters to the California State Senate saying the proposed law is unconstitutional.
