The Obama administration announced a new effort on Friday to require companies to tell the government what they pay employees.

The gender pay gap — men and women being paid different amounts for the same work — has been a pernicious problem in this country. Women still earn only about 79 cents for every dollar a man does. So will a bit of sunshine might help the cause?
