Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that the country can “grow” its way out of debt. Is growth enough?

“The bond market is often seen as the boring sibling to the stock market,” said Robin Wigglesworth. “I think that's completely wrong. It is the bedrock to the entire financial system.”

Economists say job creation in only the tens of thousands per month is enough to maintain stable, low unemployment. But there are other consequences.

The Treasury wants to use short-term borrowing to finance the national debt. While short-term interest rates are usually lower than long-term rates, they’re also more volatile.

“The K-shaped economy is over,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared on CNBC last week. Economists say the evidence is mixed at best.

If it doesn’t work, the U.S. could be stuck with a bunch of pesos that aren’t worth very much.

“If you try to solve a macro problem through tariffs, it's not going to work,” said Adam Posen, president of the Peterson Institute of International Economics, about the Trump administrations plans to rebalance the global economy.
