“They always take these videos and photos in really exotic locations, and they basically say, ‘I've made all of this money, I took my private jet to this island somewhere,’” said Jason Koebler at 404 Media.
“When you're scrolling, chances are most of the things you're seeing are actually stealth paid advertisements,” said Lane Brown at New York Magazine. “You have no idea they are ads, but they are.”
“It’s just sort of become part of the fabric of our lives. It’s now vanilla and chocolate and peppermint… and pumpkin spice,” says food writer Emily Heil.
“In the past, we’ve studied social media ads as if they’re just like a billboard or a print magazine ad when they’re not,” said advertising professor Matthew Pittman. “You’re seeing an ad from any number of sources.”
