The sheer amount of borrowing by countries covering budget deficits and tech companies building AI infrastructure is pushing rates higher.

The U.S. wants to prevent Japan selling more U.S. bonds to stabilize the yen, which would send yields higher and interest rates up for U.S. consumers.

Atchan Tamaki, the founder of seafood processor ISF Trading, has seen Maine’s sea urchin industry shrink significantly in the 40 years he’s been in business.

“I think the anime business is absolutely on a roll right now,” said Doug Montgomery, CEO of Global Connects Media. “Nothing's gonna stop it in the near future.”

Japan and China recently agreed to cooperate more economically. Now, climbing tensions are threatening that cooperation.

There's already a framework in place to prioritize strategic industries like shipbuilding and AI. A group of advisors will make recommendations and President Trump will make the final selection.

Japan is already the biggest foreign investor in the U.S.

Also, Japan is not that big of a market for U.S. exports.

They can create perverse incentives that end up boosting foreign manufacturing.

They’re worried about deficits.
