The walkout comes during the aerospace giant’s “turnaround year.”

One reason for the decline is that companies stockpiled goods in March trying to get ahead of tariffs, and are now pulling back. But it also could signal tough times ahead for the U.S. economy.

Chinese airlines have reportedly been told to stop taking delivery of Boeing jets, and at least two new jets have left the country. It’s one way U.S trade policy could hit airplane makers, which had operated tariff-free since 1980.

More profitable flying, too.

After a chaotic year, the company has to work out supply chain delays and make output consistent, experts say.

But the problem’s industry-wide: Airbus is also dealing with a hefty backlog.

The machinists union has yet to ratify the new contract, which comes during a tough period for the aviation giant and its suppliers.

Now, the company has to rebuild trust with workers as well as airline customers who have been canceling orders.

Last year, just 15% of workers had access to pension plans. Now, unionized workers like the ones at Boeing are negotiating to get them back.

Outsourcing work overseas has led to short-term financial gain in return for longer-term losses, like the ability to both make and innovate.
