If you want to lead a plant-based lifestyle, being a vegetarian in the U.S. is pretty doable these days. Avoiding plastic and man-made products and packaging altogether though? Well, that’s a different story.

Between 2012 and 2018, the number of plant-based packaged goods on the shelves more than quadrupled. And yet, that plant-based label can be a bit misleading.

Adam Clark Estes is a senior tech correspondent for Vox where he dug into the rise of plant-based products. He joined “Marketplace” host Amy Scott to discuss what the label actually tells consumers, as well as what it doesn’t.
