Facebook data on tens of millions of Americans ended up with a third party analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica. Lawmakers and privacy advocates have urged substantial changes to make sure no such breach occurs again. One alternative model would be having users pay for the use of social media sites so that the sites are not so beholden to advertisers, who crave the users’ information to better target ads.
