Netflix is making moves to shrink the amount of data going across a network when it streams movies and TV to Canadian customers. The company says that the effect on the video quality will be “minimal”, no word yet on what customers have to say. The move comes as data caps become increasingly standard in Canada. The issue is becoming a political topic in Canada with advocates of more generous pricing plans pushing politicians to take a stand ahead of the May 2nd federal elections. Could this lower quality streaming come to the US? You bet it can. All internet providers, broadband and wireless, are expressing concern about bandwidth. Whether that’s legit or just a ploy to get more money from consumers, I’ll leave that to physicists and your own level of cynicism.
