I sure hope Rockwell doesn’t own a Trendnet home security camera. Dude can get paranoid. And rightly so, since people have been able to view live camera feeds without the owners being aware. Trendnet says it’s working on an update to its firmware to fix the problem, which, although only recently exploited, has apparently been around since 2010. Add Trendnet to the list of companies trying to keep bad news a secret. It found out about the breach on January 12, but didn’t tell the public for three weeks.
The problem originally came to light in a blog post on January 10, when somebody figured out that all you needed to do was paste the camera’s IP address along with a string of 15 characters to bypass all security.
Within two days a list of 679 web addresses had been posted to one site, and others followed – in some cases listing the alleged Google Maps locations associated with each camera.
